The full-scale redevelopment of our trades teaching environments creates a state-of-the-art hub for the trades programs. The project allows VIU to expand program capabilities and address waitlists in high-demand programs.

Impacts:

  • Training students for jobs of the future. New facilities will create a learning space for new technologies, including CNG, LNG, biodiesel, computer-controlled engines, self-driving cars, emission control systems, and hybrid electric vehicles.
  • Meeting the demand for skilled workers through the creation of an additional 128 seats in the Automotive Service Technician, Carpentry, and Motorcycle and Marine Technician programs.

Features:

  • New labs, a Carpentry Shop, Student Commons, and an Accelerator Discovery Space for student and industry collaboration.
  • Co-location of the Motorcycle and Marine Technician program with the Heavy Mechanical Trades programs and CNG/LNG mechanical bays.
  • New Customer Service Centre and expanded and renovated spaces for the growing Automotive Service Technician program.

Windsor Plywood Transforms VIU

The expanded and renovated Marine, Automotive and Trades Complex at the Nanaimo VIU Campus houses the Carpentry and Motorcycle and Marine Technician programs. It features a student commons and a collaboration area for industrial partners to conduct learning seminars, hold events, and collaborate with students and faculty on innovative research projects.

In recognition of the Windsor Plywood Foundation’s long-term partnership with Vancouver Island University and their support of the Imagine VIU Campaign, we are proud to announce the naming of the Windsor Plywood Trades Discovery Centre, and the accelerator / discovery room the Windsor Innovation Space.
