Plans for a Virtual Graduation Celebration

Dear VIU community,

First of all, I hope you will all join me in wishing our Spring 2020 graduates a heartfelt congratulations. Graduating from university is an important milestone that deserves to be celebrated, honoured and reflected upon. This year it has been achieved during a time of great upheaval and uncertainty.

We announced in April that our face-to-face convocation ceremonies would not proceed as planned in June – a great disappointment to many of us who look forward to celebrating with our students. While we were initially hoping to have a face-to-face event in the fall, it has become clear that that won't be possible.

In light of that, I’m happy to announce a date for a virtual Graduation Celebration:

It will be an interactive experience that includes some elements of the traditional convocation ceremonies – with some fun new twists.

Please save this date in your calendars! We’d also like to invite you to join the Graduation Celebration event page and watch the Convocation webpage for more details, which we will be sharing over the next couple of months. We will be sending out a 2020 Celebration Box to every graduate who wants one to help our graduates get into a celebratory spirit. Learn more about this and other aspects of the event on the Graduation Celebration Frequently Asked Questions page.

I know this event does not replace an in-person gathering, and so we will be inviting all of our Spring 2020 graduates to attend one of our formal convocation ceremonies once we are able to host them again.

I look forward to celebrating with everyone on September 30!

Sincerely,

Deb Saucier, PhD
President and Vice-Chancellor
