Updated Mask Protocol December 1, 2020

VIU’s mask protocol has been updated to reflect changes recently announced by the BC Public Health Office.

Mask Protocol Effective December 1, 2020:

Face coverings are required in all indoor public spaces in all VIU buildings where people circulate freely. This means that face coverings (face masks) are now required to be worn in all indoor common areas on VIU campuses. Common areas include building lobbies, hallways, stairwells, washrooms, elevators, study areas, coffee shops, cafeterias, libraries, student services areas and other high-traffic common areas.

Exemptions:

Face coverings are not required:

  • in non-public areas such as classrooms and individual office spaces that are enclosed where individuals can maintain physical distancing from others.

  • for people who are unable to wear a mask or put on or remove a mask on their own

  • while consuming food or beverages at a location designated for those purposes (cafeteria)

Post-secondary institutions may implement more stringent mask requirements based on their individual assessments, therefore VIU faculty and departments may go above and beyond these requirements and make masks mandatory in non-public areas such as teaching areas (classrooms, labs, shops).

This protocol will be posted on the institutional safety plan site and will supersede other language written into existing plans that do not meet this as minimum criteria. WorkSafeBC and the Ministry of Advanced Education have also released some guidance on health screening in post-secondary institutions.
