Vaccine proof required for some social events in BC

As announced today by Premier John Horgan; Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry; and Minister of Health, Adrian Dix, new health orders are being put in place to address the rising case counts in the province and support the health and safety of all British Columbians.

The full announcement is on the BC Government News site; the key take away is that as of “September 13, 2021, proof of vaccination will be required in BC for people attending certain social and recreational settings and events.”

Another important take away is that an announcement is coming tomorrow, August 24, that is related directly to the post-secondary sector.

A reminder that the VaxVan will be on VIU’s Nanaimo campus on September 7, from 10 am - 4 pm, open to anyone who needs to get a first or second dose of their vaccines. We hope to have more information about other vaccine clinics soon.

As an institution we have been planning for many months for our safe return. Today’s order gives us time to make and implement changes as needed to continue to support that safe return. We will also be paying close attention to the announcement that is coming tomorrow related specifically to post-secondary institutions.

When we have more details, we will share them through email, through the employee and student enewsletters (the VIU Digest and The Pulse respectively), as well as through our Covid-19 Update page and our social media channels.
