Major classroom and technology upgrades completed across campus
In just eight months, the Technology Renewal Program has significantly improved VIU's digital infrastructure. Changes include:
- bringing a new redundant internet connection into service,
- modernizing core server infrastructure,
- completing technology upgrades in 25 classrooms,
- advancing technology in the Library Commons,
- replacing employee and student devices and
- completing a comprehensive network assessment that will guide future campus network improvements.
Together, these initiatives are building a more reliable, secure and sustainable technology foundation that better supports learning, teaching, research and university operations.
This summer, the team upgraded technology in 25 classrooms across campus. These classrooms better support hybrid learning environments. The Technology Renewal Plan includes a long-term plan for regular upgrades to ensure classroom environments remain modern.
The team also upgraded 445 student devices this summer, including devices in the Library Commons and computer labs. The Library Commons refresh included updated desktop workstations that better support student learning, collaboration and media creation, while other student-use areas were also refreshed with updated technology.
The program is also replacing employee laptops. So far, 150 employee laptops have been replaced this year, with another 150 planned for replacement through the fall.
Other important infrastructure work has also advanced:
- The redundant internet connection announced in April is now in service, significantly reducing the risk of a campus-wide internet outage.
- Network infrastructure planning and modernization activities continue, supported by a completed campus network assessment and the development of a long-term roadmap for future upgrades.
- Server modernization activities completed earlier this year have improved reliability, performance and readiness for future cloud-based services.
Student feedback shapes priorities
Earlier this year, students provided valuable feedback through a technology experience survey, identifying Wi-Fi reliability, classroom technology, printing services, computer labs and access to modern software as key priorities. The results have helped inform planning and reinforce the importance of the classroom, network and infrastructure improvements completed throughout the summer.
Next Steps
Through Fall 2026, the Technology Renewal Program will focus on laptop replacements, network and server improvements and building a four-year roadmap for upgrades. Stay tuned to the Technology Renewal Program website and the student and employee newsletters, where progress updates will be shared.
