Evacuate
- Consider a safe evacuation of the area if you know the location of the threat. When evacuating, keep your hands visible and follow police instructions.
Shelter in Place
- Remain in classroom or office and lock and barricade all doors and windows by any means available.
- Turn off lights and stay behind solid objects which are away from doors and windows.
- Minimize noise, turn off cell phones (ringers, alarms and vibrations) and audio equipment.
Take Action
If you are caught in an exposed area and you cannot get into a classroom or office you must decide on a course of action.
- Hide – remain calm and stay hidden until you can make safe contact with police.
- Running – if you think you can safely make it out of an area, run in a zigzag pattern.
- Playing dead – if others around you are wounded, you may choose to lay still.
- Fight – confrontation is a last resort. Attempt to incapacitate the assailant by any means available.
