Asbestos Management Plan

The purpose of this program is to keep asbestos exposure to the VIU community as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA). This applies to VIU employees, students, and contractors. This will be achieved through the implementation of hazard controls, Safe Work Procedures (SWP’s) and training.

The VIU Asbestos Management Plan specifies the hazard mitigation processes for asbestos-related hazards. This plan has been developed to document the processes that are in place at VIU to actively manage all suspected and known asbestos-containing materials (ACM) in university owned facilities, as well as facilities leased or rented by VIU, where work or learning activities are conducted. These activities include, but are not limited to, maintenance, repair, renovation, or demolition activities. This plan applies to all VIU employees (faculty and staff), contractors hired by VIU, and students whose work may have the potential to disturb ACM at VIU.

Asbestos awareness training is available to all VIU staff on the VIULearn website. The training is a free course that aligns with WorkSafeBC’s Level 1 Foundational Awareness certification. Participants will not receive official certification but will gain valuable knowledge equivalent to the WorkSafeBC course. The course will take approximately 1 hour to complete, followed by a 10-question quiz requiring a minimum score of 70% for successful completion. Successful participants will receive a certificate of completion. Please share a copy of your certification with your manager and forward a copy to safety@viu.ca. Retraining is recommended every three years to stay updated with regulations and best practices.
