Reporting Health and Safety Incidents at VIU


All health and safety incidents involving employees, students, contractors, and visitors that occur on our campuses or during learning or work activities must be reported to VIU within 24 hours. Health and Safety Services is the central reception point for all health and safety incidents at VIU. 

To report a health and safety incident or injury please use the online VIU Health and Safety Incident Reporting System (Safety Portal). Click on the appropriate button at the bottom of the page that corresponds with your role at VIU (Employees, Student/Visitor, or First Aid Attendant). All incident reports submitted online will immediately notify your manager.

What Health and Safety Incidents are Reported to VIU?

What Incidents Require Immediate Reporting to WorkSafeBC?

Please notify Health and Safety Services (250.740.6283) immediately when any of the following incidents occur by phone 250.740.6283 or by email (Safety@viu.ca) during weekday working hours (8 am – 4 pm). If there is no response or if the incident occurs after 4 pm, call VIU Campus Security at 250.740.6600. These must be reported to WCB Immediately by VIU on occurrence (1.888.621.7233)

  • Serious injury to or death of a worker
  • Major structural failure or collapse of a building, bridge, tower, crane, hoist, temporary construction support system, or excavation
  • Major release of a hazardous substance
  • Fire or explosion that had a potential for causing serious injury to a worker
  • Blasting incident causing personal injury
  • Dangerous incident involving explosives, whether or not there is personal injury

Observed health and safety hazards and conditions can be reported online using the VIU Health and Safety Incident Reporting System (Safety Portal). Please follow the guideline for Reporting Safety Concerns.
