Threats and Violence1

If you are here because you are currently experiencing an immediate issue of threatening or violent behaviour, please call 250.740.6600 (or 6600 from internal VIU phones) for security or 911 for the police, as you deem appropriate.

VIU has both policies surrounding, and procedures for dealing with, threats and violence in the workplace.  This said, we are happy to say that incidents are very rare.  If you are dealing with issues of harrassement, intimidation, or threats in the workplace please report it to your supervisor and to Health and Safety Services.  We will work jointly with the Director of Diversity, Equity and Human Rights Office to support you and find a constructive resolution to the root issues.

In the event that a situation appears to be escalating VIU has a Threat Assessment Team that will objectively investigate worrisome and threatening behaviours by staff, students, or visitors.  Please report concerns to Health and Safety Services and we will ensure that your concerns are followed up on immediately.

In the event that you are caught in a violent incident we have the Violent Assailant Procedure that can provide some guidance when all else has failed.  Please read this and familiarize yourself with it before you need it.
