Res Water Wise Days!
DYK?
- About 70% of the Earth is covered with water, but only 1% is available for human use
- Canada is one of the largest water per capita users in the world –around 250 L/person/day
- An average 10-minute shower uses about 80L of water–that volume is equivalent to about 160 grande lattes!
- VIU used an estimated 156 million liters of water last year–an estimated 7 million of that was for residence showers
And we haven’t even talked about laundry or heating the water for showers!
BUT–
You can make a difference!
How?
Keep water and natural gas from going down the drain by pledging to–
- Take shorter showers
- Wash clothes in cold water
Use less natural gas* AND less water
*Natural gas has high CO2 equivalent emissions which contribute to climate change
Take part!
You could win $100 GC to either the Campus Store or Food Services.
We challenge you to take shorter showers and wash in cold water (as much as possible) between March 12-23.
What do you need to do?
- Sign up (email Sustainability@viu.ca) — First 20 registrants will get a free shower timer!
- Track your shower times — We’ll calculate an estimation of how much CO2e and water were avoided. Use the online tracker daily, or fill in a paper tracker.
- Pledge to wash in cold water
- Complete your final online tracker by Saturday, March 24
- Deliver your completed tracker (if you used the paper version) to B310 R130 by Monday, March 26 — We’ll draw a winner at random from completed challenge recording sheets
