Holiday Shutdown 17

How far does energy ‘nice’ go?

It’s up to you!

We challenge you to be a part of the conservation effort across VIU–because hey, even your lights and devices need a break!

Take a moment to see where you can save a little energy,  then let us know what you were able to turn off or even unplug over the Christmas break.

It’s easy!

  1. Take a look around your area and see what could be turned off or unplugged (unplug if it’s appropriate/easy)**
  2. Fill in and submit an Energy Nice checklist (below) and you could win!
Residence — one of two $50 gift certificates to the Campus Store or Food Services–winner’s choice!
VIU/VIUSU Staff — one of two $50 gift certificates to the Campus Store or Food Services–winner’s choice!

for all Nanaimo Campus buildings EXCEPT the High School and Residences

**Shut down all**
computers, monitors, printers, departmental multi-function units, and peripherals
before leaving for Christmas 2017 break. Unplug systems if possible.
IT will be working with different areas to power off student use and instructional computers

We’ll estimate how much electricity was avoided just by turning things off or unplugging them over the holidays.
Last year it was about equivalent to running an average BC home for 6 weeks.

Watch for an estimate of energy saved in January when we announce winners!
